Stranger than Fiction

Set in the early 1980s, in a fictional Indiana town of Hawkins, Stranger Things debuted in July of 2016 to a welcoming drove of enthusiastic fanatics. The entire first season is based largely around the mysterious disappearance of a 12-year-old boy named Will Byers. Will, played by newcomer Noah Schnapp, strangely vanishes, much to the demise of his close group of friends, and his family, especially Joyce Byers, his mother (played by Winona Ryder). The tension mounts, throughout all 9 episodes, as the true happenings and whereabouts of Will Byers dangle somewhere between mystery, conspiracy, and science fiction. Stranger Things takes the viewer on a journey that is much stranger than science, and much stranger than fiction.

Stranger Things

Interestingly, especially in the first season of Stranger Things, the show gained immense popularity despite its lack (with the obvious exception of Winona Ryder) of established superstar actors. In many Netflix originals, especially ones as anticipated as Stranger Things, Hollywood cameos seem to be plentiful. But the fact that Stranger Things leaned on mostly unknown actors and actresses for its immense cast of characters should display the merits of the show, based on its widespread popularity and positive critical reception. The producers, directors, film crew, and editing staff for Stranger Things did a remarkable job of set-casting the series. From start to finish, the show seems to be an authentic glimpse directly into the happenings of a sleepy, rural, Indiana town in 1983.

Douglas County found its way onto the Netflix screen in several scenes. Two of which were the Old City building, now located on 48 Pray Street in Douglasville, and the Fair Mart located at 7703 US-78 in Winston, GA. The city building on Pray Street is right off Church Street in the downtown Douglasville area, and can easily be seen as the Police Station, very early in the first season of Stranger Things.

So whether or not you happen to be a fan of Stranger Things, Douglas County invites you to come check out some of our Douglas County locations used for filming Stranger Things, and many other films. Come for a day-trip, a vacation, or come to stay! Everyone is welcome in Douglasville, GA!
