Plot Synopsis (no spoilers)
In one of the most highly anticipated biographical dramas in recent movie history, Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc, a fledgling milkshake salesman and Illinois businessman who would eventually bring McDonald’s fast-food chain to the world. And quite literally, most of us know exactly how successful that venture was! What many folks don’t know, however, is the escalating amount of high drama that occurred on Ray Kroc’s route to success.
The Founder is not just the story of McDonald’s, nor is it simply a blue-collar success story. The Founder is the story of ambition, and persistence, and tirelessness, and of ruthless dealings. It is not an example of an American Dream that just falls in your lap over time, but rather, it’s an example of an American Dream that you snatch out of the lap of some poor schmuck who fell asleep at the wheel.
The directors, cast, crew, and editing staff all deserve a lot of credit for accurately depicting the look and feel of 1950s and 1960s America, which is when the birth of the McDonald’s franchise (as we know it today) was beginning to take shape. From scouting and pre-production, all through editing and post-production, The Founder is a truly amazing, visually stunning piece of Cinematic art.
Douglas County’s Role in “The Founder”
In June of 2015, Douglasville agreed to be the home of an original, vintage McDonald’s set, complete with the authentic Golden Arches. The old-style McDonald’s was constructed in downtown Douglasville, near Church Street and the Downtown Douglasville Old Courthouse Museum. The set was vividly-beautiful and fully-functional, and completely accomplished what it was designed to do, which was to virtually put viewers in the heart of Post-WWII America. You can also see a big banner over-arching Downtown Douglasville that proudly welcomes McDonald’s to Minnesota. In short, Douglas County is proud to have played a substantial role in the making of one of the most compelling ‘based on a true story’ films in recent years, The Founder.
